I work in a busy city-centre store in Edinburgh, as both a Colleague and a Duty Manager. I previously worked in a store in Old Town as a Colleague, before moving to my current store as a "Step-Up".
- Assuming legal responsibility for the store as the "Duty Manager," ensuring the store is Safe & Legal and rectifying issues as soon as possible
- Ensuring completion of daily, weekly and per-shift routines, both by myself and delegated to others
- Managing colleagues and acting as the go-to person for operational queries, supporting them when things go wrong and offering guidance where needed
- "Adding value" through actions both big and small
- Understanding the position of the store and what needs to be prioritised to maximise the quality of every customer's shopping trip on the day or in future
- Handling of keys and assets, for example touch computers, headsets and body-worn cameras. Ensuring these are not taken home by myself or one of my colleagues
- Ensuring the store is left in a secure state. Exterior and high-risk doors etcetera are locked and the store alarm is set
- Handling and reporting of incidents, both in-the-moment and after-the-fact
- Working directly with the Police, handing over CCTV footage, incident and offender details etcetera
- Constant communication with the leadership team in the store, to ensure we deliver a good shift and a good store for colleagues and custoemrs
- Managing self-scan checkouts, including age-approval and weight mismatches
- Serving customers with larger baskets and trolleys
- Prompting customers to scan their loyalty card, withstanding our policies and terms regarding these cards
- Serving customers bags and receipts for their shopping when requested directly or after being prompted
- Packing customers' bags
- Serving customers paying with cash or those who wish to be served by a person

(where a customer has not paid for their shopping at self-scan checkouts) - Serving customers with cards that need to be swiped such as AMEX, Visa/Mastercard Credit, Debit & Electron; other cards from overseas banks
- Performing refunds with cash and cards, Clubcard points and prices transactions while maintainging company policy as it pertains to these transactions
- Handling newspaper vouchers, gift cards and cash vouchers
- Serving customers spirits & champagne; tobacco products, e-cigarettes, nicotine pouches etcetera
- Removing security tags from products after they have been purchased
- Using various till functions including produce & bakery items, till-reading reports, till pickups, resuming printers etcetera
- Power-cycling tills and printers when they cause an issue with the till
- Serving National Lottery customers wishing to purchase or claim prizes pertaining to scratchcards and draw-based tickets
- Using other National Lottery Terminal functions such as Sign On/Off, Reports & Invoice, Cancellations etcetera
- Asking customers for valid proof-of-age, withstanding our Think-25 policy
- Refusing time and quantity-restricted sales such as alcohol in Scotland and painkillers
- Ensuring Price Integrity (see below) during quieter times
- Replenishing baskets and carrier bags
- Filling Beers, Wines & Spirits; tobacco products, frozen etcetera during quieter times
- Ensuring high-value items such as spirits, champagne & tobacco are kept in colleague-only areas wherever possible
- Facing Beers, Wines & Spirits and Large Sweets
- Performing till closing procedures including: face-up of Large Sweets and Beers, Wines & Spirits; counting scratchcards and entering those totals using the relevant till & till function and locking the dispenser; printing draw-based and scratchcard reports from the National Lottery terminal and signing out; newspaper returns using PDAs; posting notes for CIT Pickup; taring balances in the cash drawer (Till Reset); weighing cash in the till (Till Check); locking the till; turning off screens to conserve power and life of assets; closing tobacco shutter and any final put-backs; closing fridge doors & refrigeration blinds to conserve energy & perishable product life.
- Filling hundreds of lines of Beers, Wines & Spirits including chilled wine, ready-to-drink cans, cider & perry, port & fortified wines etcetera
- Knowledge of hundreds of lines of Beers, Wines & Spirits, ability to help customers find products from a specific country/region, using a specific grape variety or process
- Handling glass bottles safely and efficiently to reduce shrink and ensure our customers can get what they need
- Following Restricted Fill; using RF tags on high-value and high-risk products for loss-prevention and as a deterrent
- Acting in a supportive role for the colleague operating the CSD due to the proximity to the tills
- Knowledge of merchendising and sale laws regarding alcohol, both in Scotland and the UK as a whole including trading time restrictions, minimum unit pricing, licensing and the consequences of selling alcohol to a person under the age of eighteen
- Where appropriate by both the law and our policies, applying manual reductions to products such as multipacks where a can has been damaged
- Picking key products for filling such as bulk beer & cider to ensure these lines are well-stocked
- Cleaning up droppages by customers and colleagues using dustpan & brushes, mops, absorbent powder etcetera. Ensuring wastage is correctly recorded
- Ensuring spirits are kept inside colleague-only areas when possible
- Replenishing fresh food, drinks, milk and produce
- Rotating products both on and off the shelf to mitigate wastage
- Tagging high-value products (mostly meat) to keep stock safe
- I am trained on both side-and-rear loading deliveries, both kerbside and in the yard (the convenience store only takes side-loading kerbside deliveries)
- I am trained to take deliveries through the front of the store and other doors like fire exits & backdoors (the convenience store only takes deliveries through the front and there is no backdoor)
- Ensuring proper PPE is used
- Using universal hand signals to direct maneuvering lorries
- Loading asset & RSU returns onto the taillift
- Using various material handling equipment including (motorised) pallet trucks with various loads and roll containers (cages) in various styles & proportions
- Loading stock into and use a goods lift safely
- Switching between roles quickly, both independently and at the request of a shift leader
- Assisting the CSD worker when a single-bell is rung
- Attending emergencies
- Manual handling of roll-containers and merchendising trolleys (see Warehouse and Backdoor)
- Using goods lifts
- Recycling cardboard and polythene by placing them into RSUs
- Replacing full RSUs
- At the end of the day, bringing asset and RSU returns onto the shop floor to be loaded onto the lorry the next morning
- Cleaning stripping, base-stripping and gaps on the shelf and shelf-edge to ensure high standards on the shop floor
- Sweeping and collecting dirt and dust
- Taking out-of-code products and those not fit for human consumption to a designated area to be wasted, handling damages and droppages properly
- Ensuring proper restricted-fill and RF tagging has been followed on the shelf
- Detecting and confronting shoplifters and logging theft. Ensuring safety for myself and my colleagues, customers, our stock and assets the best I can
- Correct usage of a body-worn camera
- Communication with colleagues and security via a headset
